ISA Testing

By: Amanda, Erin, and Jury

                On the mornings of Monday, October 17th, and Tuesday, October 18th, we will take the International Schools’ Assessment (ISA) test. Grade 5 is doing this test to provide information on student progress, and to compare the results from other international schools around the world. Reading, math, and writing skills will be included in the test. On these days, there will be NO HOMEWORK! Please make sure you are well rested and relaxed so that you can do your best!

                Good luck on the test!

Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences

By: Samantha and Kyung Min

                Guess what?! The parent/student/teacher conference is coming for Grade 5. And YES, we have to be there!

                During the conference, we will discuss our goals, our problems, and how we can improve. It is very important that we are in the conference because we can also give suggestions of ways to get better.

                The conferences are on the 18th and 19th of October and are 20 minutes each in your own classroom. But guess what - on Tuesday, it is early release (at 12 noon) and on Wednesday, there is no school!

                Please make sure you get there on time!

Good Luck!!!

Filipiniana

By: Erin and Amanda

            October 26th, 27th, and 28th are three special days because it’s Filipiniana! We have Filipiniana, to learn about Philippine culture. There will be an Opening Ceremony on the 27th at 8 am, where there will be a lot of interesting performances, such as Philippine dances and songs. We will also be doing activities in class relating to Philippine culture.

Tiangge

By: Amanda and Jury

            On Thursday, the 27th of October, the whole Grade Five will be having a Tiangge. Tiangge, which is Filipino for ‘flea market,’ is when Grade Five sets up stalls in school, and sells things, like a marketplace (don’t worry, there will be no fleas!).

In order to help organize the Tiangge, a group of students are currently working together, called the Board of Directors (BoD). It is the BoD job to make sure this Tiangge will be the best ever, and to organize the committees for the Tiangge. Two BoD were elected by each class. The members of the BoD had to make a commitment; to give up their break times whenever there was going to be a meeting. The BoD is run by the students, not the teachers, to ensure that the Tiangge will be an event that, not only the teachers will like and agree on BUT, more importantly, so will the students. The BoD are not left alone to do what they want either; they’re supervised by Mr. Hamaguchi and Ms. Anderson.

            The money that we earn during this event will go to a good cause, such as a charity, or an organization.

* What’s going on…..in the Grade 5 classroom!!

By: Kyu Hee, Luke and Gio

          In all Grade 5 classes, we are working on similar things. For Math we have just finished looking at addition and subtraction and are now learning about geometry. At the moment, we are learning how to measure angles with protractors. In Language Arts, we have just finished working on personal narratives and are beginning to learn about how to write biographies. Our main topic is about communities. We are trying to work out what makes a good and just community and how people work together to succeed in different situations. We are definitely going to need to be able to do this to make Tiangge a success!

Art

By: Emilia and Manasi

In art we have recently finished making movable name tags. These name tags are now on display in glass cabinets near the Middle School cafeteria. Last year they were put on display outside Ms. G’s classroom but people started playing with them and some of them broke, so we’ve put them in glass cabinets where no-one can reach.

Right now we are working on murals. The objective of this activity is learning how to use a mirror to draw a self portrait. For this activity you need observing skills. Gary traced the top half of our body’s and then we painted it. Ms. G’s planning on permanently displaying our figures by bolting them to the Little Theater’s bare, disgusting, and also boring walls. We will make it look like an audience that is always there!

As some of you may know we have a new permanent sub for those classes who had Ms. Booth. Ms Booth’s sub is named Ms. Mouland.  Let’s all make her welcome!

" It is the process of creating art that is more important than the final product, get the process right and the end product will take care of itself... a bit like mathematics. " (Garrovillo)

Music

By Eirik, Paul and Paul David

            We interviewed Ms. Wiebe and this is what she said. She told us that we will be singing Mangga Mangga and The National Anthem during Filipiniana week so make sure you study these songs well!

                We are going to do cannon songs where one group goes at a time and partner songs. Our new composer is going to be ‘Dvorak.’ We will be doing rhythms and use xylophones when we have learnt some songs. We will also be using boomwhackers for a variety of songs.

                Looking to the future... We will have a concert this December where we will be singing songs about food!! We are looking forward to that!

PE

Fitness test

            Every 6 weeks all grade 5 students participate in a 12 min cardiovascular fitness test. For this age group an average result is hoped to be between 1400m – 1600m.  Each time a student does the test we aim to see show an improvement in their cardiovascular fitness.

            We have now finished our second 12 minute run and the results are fantastic. Every class and most of the students showed significant improvements. The kids are still very enthusiastic about the race (and some of the teachers have even caught the fever). Your support and promotion of this activity is greatly appreciated and we want to thank you for it.

            The next 12 minute run will be during the week of OCT 24-28. We will have 6 runs in total over the whole year!

            From the 3rd of October until the 28th of October, Mr. Hamaguchi’s and Ms. Murphy’s classes will be covering swimming in PE. Please remind your child to bring his/her swim gear.

            Starting the 3rd of October until the 28th of October, Mrs. Dilworth’s class will be covering basketball. Please remind your child to bring his/her P.E. uniform as well as his/her water bottle.

            Starting the 3rd of October until the 28th of October, Mr. Oomens’ class will be covering fielding and striking games. Please remind your child to be prepared for rainy and sunny days by bringing his/her P.E. uniform (including shoes), a water bottle, and hat.

            Starting the 3rd of October until the 28th of October, Ms. Voigt’s and Mr. Potts’ classes will be doing outdoor and adventure activities. Please remind your child to bring his/her P.E. uniform as well as his/her water bottle.

CMC

By: Jackie, Agustin, and JiMin!!!!!!!

                Guys guess what? There are about 25,000 books in the CMC!

These are the questions that we asked the CMC teachers.

                1. What kind of things will we be doing?

Grade 5 will be studying Philippine books because Filipiniana week is coming up. Grade 5 will also be continuing to learn about the contribution of Melvil Dewey to modern library system.

                2. Are we allowed to go to the HS Media Center and are we going go to the HS Media Center while it is our class time in the CMC?

Yes you can. If you need photocopying, you can go to the HS Media Center. We are allowed to borrow books from HS Media Center, but first you must check the book with Mr. Birchenall to see if it is appropriate for you.

                3. Why do we need the library pass now?

Because there were too many children coming so it was hard to supervise. It is easy to know what class you belong to. Also it shows that your teacher knows you’re in CMC. You still need the CMC pass to go to the HS Media Center in recess.

                4. Will we have any special events for Grade 5 in CMC?

We are still planning for read-a-thon. We will make fun ways to make people read. We are also allowed to see some special events from MS & HS Media Center.

* News from ESL

By: Nora and Su Eun

                In ESL, we have learned about poems, and how to make them. We also learned about how to use paragraphs better in our writing.

                Over the next month, we will learn about interview questions, also biographies of book characters. ESL students will teach or show the sports or fun games to preschool students. We will present about Chance Island. Chance Island is a game on a Cassette. First you have to listen to it, then after a sound you have to draw what the person said. After we complete our map, we play a game. Will you survive in Chance Island or get trapped by the evil Dr. Chance?

* A Message from Enrichment

We are all “tuning in” to thinking here in the ES. Thinking words and strategies are popping up all over: in assemblies, in student writing, in conversations, and in my classroom sessions. It’s been such a delight to get to know your children and see their minds actively engaged in inquiry! If any parents would like me to participate in their parent/teacher conferences or meet with me individually, please let me know. Email: andersonv@ismanila.com or call 0916 340 3176 I look forward to meeting you!
