Geometric Optics

When we consider the path of light, we talk about light rays, because light usually travels in a straight line like the particle that it is.  (More later…..)

Reflection:      Two types of reflection:

Diffuse:  the rays are reflected in random directions. (Example?)

Specular:  parallel rays are reflected parallel to each other.

LAW OF REFLECTION:

Angle of reflection is equal to the angle of incidenceALWAYS!!!

What is Reflection good for?  (deleted to avoid self-incrimination )

When we look into a mirror, light rays seem to be coming from objects that are on the other side of the mirror.   The image is formed in our brain on the opposite side of the mirror, and it is the same size as the object and the same distance from the mirror as the object.

But is it REAL?!?   Stop being silly, of course its not real!  So we call it a VIRTUAL image to sound smart.

Here, the baby does not understand about virtual images and is foolishly trying to grab its image.  Babies are so stupid sometimes.

The image is called a virtual image because:

--No real light rays pass through any part of the virtual image.

(So how do you think a real image is defined?)

Plane mirrors form images that are:

·       Erect  (as opposed to being inverted, or upside down)

·       Laterally inverted (left & right appear to be switched)*

·       Same size (not Magnified or Diminished)

·       Virtual (see above)

Equidistant from the mirror as the Object.
